Ifield Ducklings May 2026

6/5/2026

Today our Duckling Eggs arrived. Today we can see a small indentation in two of the eggs, and if you listen carefully you can hear chirping from inside the egg shells.

Ducklings starting to break free

Hatching Day

After a few days of watching wobbling eggs, hearing cheeping  from inside the eggs and seeing the first attempts to peck their way out we finally have a duckling! It looked very tired when it emerged but will soon fluff up and be an active little duckling. It must stay in the incubator for at least 2 hours to gain strength. You cannot transfer just one duckling to the cage so it’s a waiting game for a friend.

More Ducklings hatch, after the first one walks around the incubator waking them all up. They are making lots of noise now. The ducklings are yellow and soft. Ready to move into their cage.

The ducklings will stay under the warm heat pad. It is like cuddling up under the mother duck. They will adventure out to explore their world and eat and drink.

Ducklings do not need to eat or drink for 24 hours as their egg contained enough food to fill them up for now. Then they will eat some special duck food and drink water.

We have to show the first duck where to eat and drink. The others will copy, drink and eat themselves. They love water so much that they will try to get into the water feeder and will also dribble water all over the floor.

Soon we will teach the ducklings to swim. We have to teach them to dive for food too.
