Share the Animal Profile reptiles in the UK. We are going to write our own animal profile about reptiles, but first we need to learn about reptiles.

 

Activity

Higher ability To use their phonics to read the names of the reptiles. Match to photograph. Adult to scribe nouns and adjectives offered by child.

Middle ability To use their phonics to identify initial sound of reptile name. offer two photographs for the child to match against.

Lower ability  Adult to share the pictures of the reptiles and say one or two words, eg snake, brown lizard, scaly, crocodile - sharp teeth. Watch reaction of your child. Maybe extend with a sound that you think the reptile might make.

LO: To begin to understand place value

Place value is the value of each digit in a number (where it is placed/sits in the number) eg when the number 4 is here [4] it represents 4 ones. But then the number is placed here [41] the 4 represent 4 tens (40).

LO: To make a healthy snack (fruit reptiles)

  

Starter

Gather a small range of food from the cupboard. Look at the labels and sort them into healthy and unhealthy foods. Introduce the red/amber/green sections on the labels that indicate sugar and fats. Today we are going to use healthy fruit to make a snack in the shape of a reptile!

 

Activity

Make fruit reptiles. Remember to hold the knife safely.

Starter

Yesterday we began to learn about reptiles. Can you remember something that you learnt about a reptile using non-fiction text/reptile profile?

 

Activity

 

Higher and Middle ability:

Today we are going to use the internet to find a picture and then write a sentence about what we know. Write down some questions that you would like to find the answer to e.g. what does the reptiles eat? Which country does the reptile live in? Does it live in water or on the land?

 

Lower ability

Match the photographs of reptiles. Which ones are the same?

LO: To understand that some reptiles have legs

Starter

Watch video about reptiles. Can you point out the reptiles that have legs. How many legs do they have? What reptile is it?

LO: To make a shoe box rainforest                                 

 

Starter      

Read through the fact sheet about boa constrictor snakes. This particular snake lives in a rainforest in South America.

 

                                                                                                                                      

Activities

To make a rainforest inside a box. Cut the front off of the box and use it to make trees (colour and paint). Paint the floor green for the plants and blue for the river. Make a snake to slither through the trees.

How did we feel on Christmas morning when we opened out presents? Were we happy? Maybe we should say thank you to people who gave us presents. That would make them feel happy too. Lets write them a ‘Thank you’ letter or card.

Starter

we were finding out new information about reptiles. Can you remember something new that you learnt yesterday about a reptile using non-fiction texts/reptile profiles? Today we are going to use a range of resources to find out more information about the reptile of our choice so that we can write our own reptile profile.

 

First you need to choose which reptile you would like to research and write your profile about.

 

Activity

Higher ability: Use computers to find a photo of the reptile of your choice. Copy and paste the photo on to word. Type the name of the reptile using the keyboard. Print your work. All will need support from an adult.

 

Middle ability: Use the Communicate in Print symbols to write a sentence about a reptile. Encourage your child to copy the words or make marks under the symbols.

Using a pendulum (block on sting), encourage your child to count as a class in 1s and 2s to 30, forwards and backwards.

 

Activity

Complete the how many tens and how many ones differentiated worksheet. Use pasta etc to support with understanding.

 

Lower Ability: Complete number jigsaws or shape sorters that you have at home or place numerals into dry or wet sensory material (eg flour or shampoo) and explore the shapes of the numbers with your fingers.

 

Life skills

LO: To learn how to care for our teeth

 

Starter

Look at healthy eating plate. The foods are put into groups. Can you name any of the foods or the group names? What makes a food healthy or unhealthy?

 

Activity

Look at the worksheet – cut out the foods and sort them into healthy and unhealthy foods.
