At Ifield School, for pupils for which it is appropriate, we teach the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds synthetic phonics programme. Pupils learn to read and spell by developing their phonic knowledge and skills in discreet phonics lessons. Pupils then apply these skills through guided reading sessions using Little Wandle reading books. Pupils will complete a phonics screening check if they are able to acquire phonic skills appropriate to their age by the end of Year One or Two.

Those pupils who are unable to access phonics engage in a range of Foundation for Literacy activities to develop skills such as joint attention, listening and sitting as part of a communication group. Pupils will be engaged in activities which include Attention Autism, the Curiosity Programme and Sensory Stories.
